Political Surveillance 3

September 7, 2010

Labor Day is the traditional start of the campaign season and the time pollsters like to take snapshots of which direction the political winds are blowing as the clock ticks closer to Election Day.

The latest ABC News/Washington Post poll has Republicans leading 53 percent to 40 percent on the generic ballot test, the largest lead either party has produced since 1981. Today’s NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll has the GOP up 49-40 among registered voters. Rasmussen’s latest national telephone survey has 48 percent of likely voters siding with the GOP in the upcoming congressional election versus just 36 percent who are opting to stick with the Democrats.  That’s the second time in the past 30 days their generic ballot results show a record margin for Republican congressional candidates.

The tremendous momentum indicated in these national polls gives our statewide candidates an excellent climate for this year’s campaign.

But we have plenty of reasons to be concerned.

Polls show what would happen if the election were held today.  But, the election isn’t being held today.  It’s 56 days from now, and during that time anything can happen.

Our opponents have a lot going against them, but they will also focus considerable resources against our candidates.  They have stepped up their opposition research, attempting to smear our candidates and distort their records.  Many district lines are drawn in their favor, labor unions will spend tens of millions of dollars on their behalf, and we can expect many in the national and state media to shine a sympathetic light on Democrat candidates as Election Day approaches.

The outcome of many races will be determined by what we as Republicans do in the campaign’s closing days.  Your work in support of our candidates is critical to victory in November and moving our state and nation in a new direction.

I can’t individually thank every one of the tens of thousands of volunteers, donors, and candidates stepping up for this campaign.  Yet the Republican Party appreciates the hard work and sacrifices of every one, and this great cause, the future of our state and nation, is worth it.

Thank you for your leadership,
Ron Nehring

Republicans making gains against Democrats ahead of midterm election

By Dan Balz and Jon Cohen, Washington Post Staff Writers

Republicans are heading into the final weeks of the midterm campaign with the political climate highly in their favor, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll. Americans are increasingly frustrated by a lack of economic progress, deeply dissatisfied with the federal government and critical of President Obama’s leadership.

-  -  -  -  -  -  -

Among all voters, 47 percent say they would back the Republican in their congressional district if the election were held now, while 45 percent would vote for the Democrat. Any GOP advantage on this question has been rare in past years – and among those most likely to vote this fall, the Republican advantage swells to 53 percent to the Democrats’ 40 percent.

Generic Congressional Ballot: Republicans 48%, Democrats 36%

Rasmussen Reports

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 48% of Likely Voters would vote for their district’s Republican congressional candidate, while 36% would opt for his or her Democratic opponent. The survey data was collected on the seven days ending Sunday, September 5, 2010.

This matches the largest advantage ever measured for the Republicans. Three weeks ago, the GOP also held a 12-point lead.

Still, while the margin has varied somewhat from week-to-week, Republicans have been consistently ahead in the Generic Ballot for over a year. During 2010, the GOP edge has never fallen below five points. When Barack Obama first took office as president of the United States, the Democrats enjoyed a seven-point lead on the Generic Ballot.

Poll: Clear GOP advantage ahead of midterms
Republicans have a nine-point edge among those considered likely voters

By Mark Murray, Deputy Political Director, NBC News

A combination of sky-high GOP enthusiasm, a deep sense of pessimism about the country’s direction and dissatisfaction with President Barack Obama’s stewardship of the economy has given Republicans a clear advantage heading into the November midterm elections, according to the latest NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll.

With the Labor Day holiday marking the traditional starting point of the campaign season, Republicans have a nine-point edge among those considered likely voters, plus a near 20-point lead among those expressing the highest amount of interest in the midterms.

In addition, six in 10 believe the country is on the wrong track; nearly two-thirds think the nation is in a state of decline; and a similar number aren’t confident that their children’s generation will enjoy a better life.

Calvert Calls on Hedrick to Keep out of Taxpayers’ Wallets

September 8, 2010 – Today, Congressman Ken Calvert (R-Corona) called on his opponent, Rialto union boss Bill Hedrick, to oppose any tax increases on working families and small businesses during the worst economy most people have ever seen.

“My position on taxes is crystal clear – I will oppose any tax increase on families and small businesses,” said Rep. Ken Calvert. “Bill Hedrick’s position on taxes seems to change depending on the audience he’s talking to.  Mr. Hedrick has publicly supported a slew of tax hikes that will take more money out of family budgets and make it harder for small businesses to hire more workers. Taxpayers simply can’t afford to be the piggy bank Bill Hedrick loots in order to fund his progressive agenda.”
Bill Hedrick recently announced his support for an economic agenda that includes tax credits for “private sector job creation” and “companies that maintain an American workforce.”  However, Mr. Hedrick has supported a number of tax increases that would increase taxes on the very same businesses that are the focus of his economic agenda.

“I have signed the Americans for Tax Reform’s Taxpayer Protection Pledge promising to oppose any and all tax increases,” said Rep. Calvert. “If Bill Hedrick is truly committed to cutting taxes and helping our economy, he should sign the Taxpayer Protection Pledge as well.  Until he signs the Pledge, I would urge all taxpayers to keep a close eye on their wallets while Bill Hedrick is around.”

Here are just a few examples of tax increases Bill Hedrick supports that would have negative economic consequences for families and small businesses:

  • Bill Hedrick has suggested that the so-called Bush tax cuts should expire, meaning taxpayers in all tax brackets will be hit with an income tax increase, the “marriage penalty” (narrower tax brackets for married couples) will return from the first dollar of income, the child tax credit will be cut in half from $1000 to $500 per child, and the standard deduction will no longer be doubled for married couples relative to the single level.  (Source: Bill Hedrick for Congress Facebook Note)

  • Bill Hedrick is a strong supporter of ObamaCare which contains over twenty new or higher taxes.  (Source: Hedrick for Congress E-mail sent 9/30/2009, Subject: The Final Straw)

  • Bill Hedrick supports H.R. 676 which imposes a new excise tax on payroll and self-employment income and a tax increase on the top 5 percent of income earners.  (Source: “Kudos From Conyers as PDA Brings Single-Payer Outreach to the OC,” 4/15/2009,pdamerica.org)

  • Bill Hedrick supported Speaker Pelosi’s Fiscal Year 2010 budget which contained $1.5 trillion in tax increases over the next 10 years – including tax hikes on small businesses, investors, families, and workers.  (Source: “GOP Rants Ignore Real Concerns,” Op-Ed by Bill Hedrick, 4/16/2009, The Press-Enterprise)

  • Bill Hedrick supports the America’s Energy Security Trust Fund Act, which would impose a national carbon tax on all forms of fossil fuels.  (Source: Progressive Democrats of America 2010 Candidate Questionnaire)

POUGNET MISLEADS VOTERS, FORGETS TO MENTION FAILED LEADERSHIP IN NEW TV AD‏

Palm Desert, CA – Steve Pougnet, the liberal establishment’s candidate for Congress, forgot to inform voters in his first television advertisement of his failed record as Mayor of Palm Springs.  Ryan Mahoney, Campaign Manager for Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack (CA-45), issued the following statements as a service to voters in California’s 45th Congressional District:

“Voters in this District deserve to know the truth about Steve Pougnet. In his most recent television ad, Pougnet touts his recent pay cut.  However, he fails to mention that he raised his pay 65% after taking office in 2007.  Mayor Pougnet claims to have created jobs in Palm Springs but fails to mention that the unemployment rate has nearly tripled since taking office.  Steve Pougnet cites a balanced budget, but fails to mention that his reckless spending created a multi-million dollar budget deficit this year, forcing layoffs at the Palm Springs Police Department, the closure of a Fire Station and the local jail.

“Steve Pougnet fails to mention a lot in his television ad.  I guess he needs more than a thirty second commercial to try and justify his failed leadership.”

Republican Leadership Update

Republican Leadership Update

September 3, 2010

Ever since our successful convention in San Diego the Republican campaign in California has been in overdrive and it’s only going to get even more intense as we get past this Labor Day weekend and move into the final stretch.

The CRP’s aggressive political programs, launched more than a year ago, are paying off for our candidates. We just passed 230,000 new Republicans registered through the CRP, and on Tuesday we learned that San Diego County, the fifth largest county in America, switched from Democrat to Republican in registration.  The “left coast” suddenly doesn’t look so “left.”

The competitiveness of the California Republican campaign has put our state in the national spotlight.  On Wednesday afternoon I was in Washington for meetings on the fall campaign then flew back to Los Angeles to spend all day Thursday with Senator Scott Brown (MA), who was the featured speaker at a CRP fundraiser in Los Angeles and later fired up Republican volunteers and contributors at events with our next Senator, Carly Fiorina, in Burbank and Orange County.

Last weekend we completed our second CRP Campaign Management College, training more than 60 candidates, campaign managers and staff in an intensive, top tier, two day program.  In all, the CRP has trained more than 800 Republican leaders this year through our CRP Academy Program.

Meanwhile, national political observer Larry Sabato of the University of Virginia ruined Nancy Pelosi’s Labor Day with his prediction Republicans will take control of the House and make big gains in the Senate and among governorships.  The failure of the Democrats’ economic agenda is at the center of their problems:

Conditions have deteriorated badly for Democrats over the summer.  The economy appears rotten, with little chance of a substantial comeback by November 2nd. Unemployment is very high, income growth sluggish, and public confidence quite low.

You can read Larry Sabato’s full analysis of the current state of the campaign here.

Here in California, the economy continues to be the top issue as the state’s unemployment rate remains much higher than the national rate (which itself ticked up to 9.6% on Friday).  If all of Jerry Brown’s big government ideas were actually good for jobs, wouldn’t California’s unemployment rate be lower than Texas’?  Exactly.

You can feel the momentum: Carly Fiorina won her debate with Barbara Boxer, tens of thousands of voters are registering Republican each week, and Meg Whitman continues to lead a statewide ticket that is the most diverse and compelling in our party’s history.

Thank you for your leadership.  Enjoy your Labor Day weekend!

All the best,

In Case You Missed It: Jerry’s Jargon

“Does Jerry Brown honestly believe he was born and bred to be Governor of California…again? Brown’s preconceived notion that he was ‘born ready’ is a testimony to his sense of entitlement and insensitivity to the dire needs of California. The Golden State is not seeking a Brown dynasty. The people of California are in need of a governor with proven leadership and a plan to create new jobs.”

In Case You Missed It: Waters Family Profiting from Mailer Biz

“Rep. Maxine Waters has turned political endorsements into a family business, using federal election laws to charge California candidates and political causes to include their names as her personal picks on a sample ballot, or “slate mailer,” she sends to as many as 200,000 South Central Los Angeles voters, records show.”

CRP Statement Regarding Tonight’s U.S. Senate Debate

“Carly Fiorina demonstrated tonight that her real-world experience in creating jobs, making payrolls and managing budgets is just the recipe to oust out-of-touch career politician Barbara Boxer and her job-killing policies of higher taxes, more regulations and crippling national debt.”

CRP Press Release: Jerry Brown’s 40 Year Affair with Government Unions

“Throughout his 40 years in politics, Jerry Brown has consistently shown preferential treatment to government unions regardless of the impact on California,” said Brian Seitchik, spokesman for the California Republican Party. “With Brown’s fervent support for unions during his first eight years as Governor, and the expectation of continued enthusiasm for their issues, Jerry Brown Inc. has already spent more than $14 million on Brown’s behalf knowing that if he is elected Governor, he will shield union jobs and pensions at the expense of California’s fiscal wellbeing.”

CRP Press Release: It’s Not the “Left Coast” Any More: Republicans Retake Status as Largest Party in San Diego County, New Data Shows

“In the latest sign of a Republican Party on the rise in California, Republicans surged past Democrats in the last month to become the largest party in San Diego County, the fifth largest county in America and second largest in California.”

CRP Press Release: Part II Barbara Boxer vs. American Tax Payer

“Yesterday, Senator Barbara Boxer sent out an email blast from her official office highlighting her participation in a rally organized by the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor earlier this month. Senator Boxer used taxpayer resources to promote and participate in the rally that news outlets identified as “highly political” and “laced with heavy criticism for Republicans running for governor and senator.” Boxer’s official email blast further exemplifies the Senator’s manipulation of Senate ethics rules.”

In Case You Missed It: Nurses Pressured to Protest

“Yesterday KABC Eyewitness News Reporter Nanette Miranda reported on why California Legislators conducted a hearing inquiring into possible misconduct by the California Nurses Union. Despite their efforts, the Senate committee failed to approve AB 378 which would have ensured continuing education of nurses focused on patient care and not lobbying in Sacramento.”

MUST READS OF THE WEEK

Peter Roff – Obama’s Overreach Has Even Made GOP Competitive on the West Coast. Pollster Scott Rasmussen’s release last week of data showing registered voters trusted the Republicans to handle 10 key issues–the economy, ethics and government corruption, taxes, the war on terror and national security, Iraq, Afghanistan, immigration, healthcare, education, and Social Security –more than they trusted the Democrats was treated by many as an outlier.

Brian Bolduc – San Diego Looks Good in Red. Republicans are bragging that they’ve retaken the lead among registered voters in San Diego County, the second largest county in California. At the beginning of last month, Republicans trailed Democrats by 4,850 voters. Now, they lead by 891.

Karl Rove – Obama’s ‘Come Home America’ Speech. At times Tuesday night, it sounded as if President Barack Obama didn’t know what kind of speech he wanted to give. Was it a foreign policy address aimed at assuring a world-wide audience of America’s resolve in the war against militant Islam? Or was it an election stump speech to confirm to voters that the economy is job No. 1 for this president and his party?

John Fund – Keep Manchin in the Masion. As if Democrats didn’t have enough headaches, it now appears another of their Senate seats is in play. Rasmussen Reports has a new survey out showing West Virginia Democratic Governor Joe Manchin with a slimmer-than-expected lead in November’s special election to fill out the unexpired part of the late Robert Byrd’s term. The results prompted pollster Scott Rasmussen to move the seat into the “leans Democratic” category.

Michael Barone - Down With Big Government, Big Business, Big Labor. Some of the most important things in history are things that didn’t happen — even though just about everyone thought they would. Recent example: Scads of liberals gleefully predicted that the financial crisis and deep recession would destroy Americans’ faith in markets and increase their confidence in big government. Many conservatives gloomily feared they were right.

BONO MACK CAMPAIGN RELEASES “BUS TOUR” INTERNET AD, HIGHLIGHTS POUGNET’S FAILED LEADERSHIP

Palm Desert, CA – Today, the Mary Bono Mack Campaign released an Internet ad entitled, “Bus Tour”, which highlights Steve Pougnet’s failed leadership as the Mayor of Palm Springs.  Since being elected as Mayor in 2007, unemployment in Palm Springs has skyrocketed, law enforcement officials have been fired, and local businesses, restaurants, and the City jail have been forced to close.  Following the release of this new ad, Ryan Mahoney, Campaign Manager for Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack (CA-45) issued the following statements:

“Steve Pougnet is a huge disappointment to Palm Springs and the entire Coachella Valley. His failed leadership has ruined the local economy and made the national recession even worse.

“‘Bus Tour’ offers a glimpse into Steve Pougnet’s Palm Springs where vacant signs litter Downtown storefronts and unemployment numbers are growing like the pot at our three new marijuana dispensaries.

“Voters in California’s 45th Congressional District should not trust a Pelosi/Boxer liberal like Steve Pougnet.  He will ruin this Country, just like he ruined Palm Springs.”

Republican Leadership Update

Republican Leadership Update

August 26, 2010

The results are in and when it comes to providing a big boost to our candidates, the state Republican convention in San Diego was a huge success.

Here’s a quick summary of the latest campaign developments:

  • Meg Whitman is now ahead of Jerry Brown by 8 points in the latest Rasmussen Reports poll conducted two days following our incredibly successful convention in San Diego.  The press coverage coming out of our convention was just excellent.  Take a look.
  • Pressing our advantage in this favorable political environment, the CRP launched CRPWomen.org, highlighting our Republican women candidates for local, state and federal offices while making it easier than ever for California women to find their local Republican women’s club or join our CRP Women’s Network.  Check it out.
  • With the most dynamic and diverse ticket in our state party’s history, we’re promoting Republican candidates from diverse backgrounds and our Networks program through our new website at CRPNetworks.org.  Through this site people can learn more about many of our candidates, follow their latest news, and join one of 26 new Republican Networks in California.
  • Candidates, campaign staff and activists can get the political training necessary for victory at our final CRP Academy Campaign Management College in Orange County this weekend, August 28 – 29.  This 20-hour program takes place over two days and provides in-depth training in the areas of campaign planning and management, communications, fundraising and more.  For more information and to apply visit cagop.org/college.
  • With no issues to run on, Democrats are turning to a strategy of demonizing Republicans, hoping to make elections about individual candidates rather than the key issues of taxes, spending, the economy, jobs and debt.  The Washington Post and other media outlets have discovered the last-ditch effort and are reporting on it.  Story
  • More and more Californians are registering with the Republican Party, and the CRP announced this weekend that we have registered more than 206,000 new Republicans through our statewide voter registration program.  That’s more new Republicans than the entire population of Yolo or Imperial Counties.  Congratulations to all of our county committees and Republican volunteer groups who are helping to build the ranks of the Republican Party just in time for Election Day.
  • The world is run by those who show up, and our party is now turning to building the statewide Republican voter turnout program that will help make sure Republicans turn out and cast their ballots on or before Election Day.  Remember, voting takes place over a 30 day period, ending on Election Day November 2nd but starting on October 4th when vote by mail ballots start to drop.  You can help the Republican turnout program by volunteering with the Republican Party.

Thank you for your leadership.

CRP Press Release: Retired Colonel Calls on Jerry Brown to Return Money Raised at Fundraiser hosted by Anti-Troop Code Pink Leader

“I am deeply troubled and disappointed that Jerry Brown went to the home of Jodie Evans, one of the leaders of Code Pink, last weekend to raise thousands of dollars for his gubernatorial campaign. Sadly, Jodie Evans and her Code Pink associates have taunted the mothers of heroes who gave their lives in combat, telling Debbie Lee that her son ‘deserved to die in Iraq if he was stupid enough to go over there.’ While military women and men are proud that we defend the rights of all citizens to voice their dissent, this type of behavior crosses the line in a civil society…”

“Barbara Boxer’s unwavering determination to extend her political career to four full decades has nothing to do with public service, and everything to do with her self-serving quest for power and privilege.  We do, however, have to give her credit for making her craven motivation to save the one job she cares about so apparent to voters who are suffering under 12.3% unemployment perpetuated by the failed policies she’s championed.”

MUST READS OF THE WEEK

Karl RoveHoney, I Shrunk My Approval Ratings. In what will rank as one of the all-time presidential PR disasters, we’re now well over half way through what the White House called “the summer of recovery.” And what a recovery it’s been. Earlier this month, first-time claims for unemployment hit a nine-month high. The unemployment rate remains at 9.5% and 18.4% of workers are out of a job, can only get part-time work, or have given up looking for a job altogether. Sales of existing homes dropped 27% from June to July, hitting the lowest point since data were first collected in 1999.

Michael Barone – Redistricting Could Prolong the Democrats’ Pain.
Every 10 years, it’s time for reapportionment and redistricting. The framers of the Constitution created the first regularly scheduled national census and required, for the first time that I am aware, that representation in a legislature be apportioned according to population.

Fred Barnes – Obama’s Four Disasters. Recovery summer, opposition to Arizona’s immigration law, negative campaigning, and intervention in the Ground Zero mosque dispute-call them Obama’s Four Disasters. As policy, they’re questionable. As political exercises, they’re losers. As clues about Obama, they’re evidence he’s lost his political knack.

Peggy Noonan- Information Overload Is Nothing New. It’s high summer and we’re all out there seeing each other. We’re not hidden away in our homes and offices as we are in winter’s cold. We’re part of a crowd-on the street, in the park, on the boardwalk, on the top deck of the ferry to Saltaire. And we can see in some new or clearer ways how technology is changing us.

Dick Morris – Party Trend Has Yet to Kick In. Don’t confuse the dramatic swell of the Republican tide that is becoming increasingly evident to the pundits of the country with party trend. Right before Election Day, the numbers will get even better and presage an even larger Republican victory.
