Calvert Calls on Hedrick to Keep out of Taxpayers’ Wallets

September 8, 2010 – Today, Congressman Ken Calvert (R-Corona) called on his opponent, Rialto union boss Bill Hedrick, to oppose any tax increases on working families and small businesses during the worst economy most people have ever seen.

“My position on taxes is crystal clear – I will oppose any tax increase on families and small businesses,” said Rep. Ken Calvert. “Bill Hedrick’s position on taxes seems to change depending on the audience he’s talking to.  Mr. Hedrick has publicly supported a slew of tax hikes that will take more money out of family budgets and make it harder for small businesses to hire more workers. Taxpayers simply can’t afford to be the piggy bank Bill Hedrick loots in order to fund his progressive agenda.”
Bill Hedrick recently announced his support for an economic agenda that includes tax credits for “private sector job creation” and “companies that maintain an American workforce.”  However, Mr. Hedrick has supported a number of tax increases that would increase taxes on the very same businesses that are the focus of his economic agenda.

“I have signed the Americans for Tax Reform’s Taxpayer Protection Pledge promising to oppose any and all tax increases,” said Rep. Calvert. “If Bill Hedrick is truly committed to cutting taxes and helping our economy, he should sign the Taxpayer Protection Pledge as well.  Until he signs the Pledge, I would urge all taxpayers to keep a close eye on their wallets while Bill Hedrick is around.”

Here are just a few examples of tax increases Bill Hedrick supports that would have negative economic consequences for families and small businesses:

  • Bill Hedrick has suggested that the so-called Bush tax cuts should expire, meaning taxpayers in all tax brackets will be hit with an income tax increase, the “marriage penalty” (narrower tax brackets for married couples) will return from the first dollar of income, the child tax credit will be cut in half from $1000 to $500 per child, and the standard deduction will no longer be doubled for married couples relative to the single level.  (Source: Bill Hedrick for Congress Facebook Note)

POUGNET MISLEADS VOTERS, FORGETS TO MENTION FAILED LEADERSHIP IN NEW TV AD‏

Palm Desert, CA – Steve Pougnet, the liberal establishment’s candidate for Congress, forgot to inform voters in his first television advertisement of his failed record as Mayor of Palm Springs.  Ryan Mahoney, Campaign Manager for Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack (CA-45), issued the following statements as a service to voters in California’s 45th Congressional District:

“Voters in this District deserve to know the truth about Steve Pougnet. In his most recent television ad, Pougnet touts his recent pay cut.  However, he fails to mention that he raised his pay 65% after taking office in 2007.  Mayor Pougnet claims to have created jobs in Palm Springs but fails to mention that the unemployment rate has nearly tripled since taking office.  Steve Pougnet cites a balanced budget, but fails to mention that his reckless spending created a multi-million dollar budget deficit this year, forcing layoffs at the Palm Springs Police Department, the closure of a Fire Station and the local jail.

“Steve Pougnet fails to mention a lot in his television ad.  I guess he needs more than a thirty second commercial to try and justify his failed leadership.”

Ever since our successful convention in San Diego the Republican campaign in California has been in overdrive and it’s only going to get even more intense as we get past this Labor Day weekend and move into the final stretch.

The CRP’s aggressive political programs, launched more than a year ago, are paying off for our candidates. We just passed 230,000 new Republicans registered through the CRP, and on Tuesday we learned that San Diego County, the fifth largest county in America, switched from Democrat to Republican in registration.  The “left coast” suddenly doesn’t look so “left.”

The competitiveness of the California Republican campaign has put our state in the national spotlight.  On Wednesday afternoon I was in Washington for meetings on the fall campaign then flew back to Los Angeles to spend all day Thursday with Senator Scott Brown (MA), who was the featured speaker at a CRP fundraiser in Los Angeles and later fired up Republican volunteers and contributors at events with our next Senator, Carly Fiorina, in Burbank and Orange County.

Last weekend we completed our second CRP Campaign Management College, training more than 60 candidates, campaign managers and staff in an intensive, top tier, two day program.  In all, the CRP has trained more than 800 Republican leaders this year through our CRP Academy Program.


Meanwhile, national political observer Larry Sabato of the University of Virginia ruined Nancy Pelosi’s Labor Day with his prediction Republicans will take control of the House and make big gains in the Senate and among governorships.  The failure of the Democrats’ economic agenda is at the center of their problems:

Conditions have deteriorated badly for Democrats over the summer.  The economy appears rotten, with little chance of a substantial comeback by November 2nd. Unemployment is very high, income growth sluggish, and public confidence quite low.

Here in California, the economy continues to be the top issue as the state’s unemployment rate remains much higher than the national rate (which itself ticked up to 9.6% on Friday).  If all of Jerry Brown’s big government ideas were actually good for jobs, wouldn’t California’s unemployment rate be lower than Texas’?  Exactly.

You can feel the momentum: Carly Fiorina won her debate with Barbara Boxer, tens of thousands of voters are registering Republican each week, and Meg Whitman continues to lead a statewide ticket that is the most diverse and compelling in our party’s history.

Peter Roff – Obama’s Overreach Has Even Made GOP Competitive on the West Coast. Pollster Scott Rasmussen’s release last week of data showing registered voters trusted the Republicans to handle 10 key issues–the economy, ethics and government corruption, taxes, the war on terror and national security, Iraq, Afghanistan, immigration, healthcare, education, and Social Security –more than they trusted the Democrats was treated by many as an outlier.

Brian Bolduc – San Diego Looks Good in Red. Republicans are bragging that they’ve retaken the lead among registered voters in San Diego County, the second largest county in California. At the beginning of last month, Republicans trailed Democrats by 4,850 voters. Now, they lead by 891.

Karl Rove – Obama’s ‘Come Home America’ Speech. At times Tuesday night, it sounded as if President Barack Obama didn’t know what kind of speech he wanted to give. Was it a foreign policy address aimed at assuring a world-wide audience of America’s resolve in the war against militant Islam? Or was it an election stump speech to confirm to voters that the economy is job No. 1 for this president and his party?

John Fund – Keep Manchin in the Masion. As if Democrats didn’t have enough headaches, it now appears another of their Senate seats is in play. Rasmussen Reports has a new survey out showing West Virginia Democratic Governor Joe Manchin with a slimmer-than-expected lead in November’s special election to fill out the unexpired part of the late Robert Byrd’s term. The results prompted pollster Scott Rasmussen to move the seat into the “leans Democratic” category.

Michael Barone - Down With Big Government, Big Business, Big Labor. Some of the most important things in history are things that didn’t happen — even though just about everyone thought they would. Recent example: Scads of liberals gleefully predicted that the financial crisis and deep recession would destroy Americans’ faith in markets and increase their confidence in big government. Many conservatives gloomily feared they were right.

CUPERTINO – Meg Whitman today announced the endorsement of the Greater Riverside Chambers of Commerce Political Action Committee. The chamber group is the leading advocate for business in the greater Riverside area and one of the largest chambers in Southern California.

August 31, 2010 – Today, Representative Ken Calvert announced the endorsement of three Orange County Supervisors.  The following Supervisors have endorsed Rep. Calvert:
