Republican Leadership Update

The latest sign America did not take a big lurch to the left in 2008 came this week as Gallup announced new survey data showing conservatives are the largest, and growing, segment of the voting population while the number of self-identified liberals continues to decline.

Analysts are looking closely at what independent voters are doing, and Gallup found they are moving in our direction:

“Changes among political independents appear to be the main reason the percentage of conservatives has increased nationally over the past year: the 35% of independents describing their views as conservative in 2009 is up from 29% in 2008.”

Meanwhile, Barack Obama, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid continue to run Washington as though they have some big mandate for tax hikes, massive deficits, and an even more intrusive federal government.  Perhaps this explains why the President’s approval rating has dropped faster than any President in modern times, and only 17% of Americans approve of Nancy Pelosi’s Congress.

Tea Party Express Begins Tour in San Diego
On Sunday I had the honor of addressing the thousands of Tea Party Express supporters at Tuna Harbor Park in San Diego, with the magnificent U.S.S. Midway in the background. The incredible turnout far exceeded what the organizers were expecting: further proof that so many Californians, not just Republicans, are upset with the reckless spending and liberal agenda the Obama administration has pursued this year.  It was very encouraging to see the response to what leaders like Howard Kaloogian and Peter Foy had to say about putting Washington on a path of lower taxes and limited government  Detailed report Photos

More developments…

  • On Saturday I attended the Republican Party of Riverside County’s Liberty Dinner featuring Congressman Darrell Issa.  In my remarks I noted that no trend in American politics today is running in the Democrats’ favor, presenting Republicans with excellent opportunities to make advances in 2010.  Congratulations to Chairman Ken Minesinger and his team for an excellent event, and to the Morongo Band of Mission Indians for their generous support.

  • Monday afternoon we recorded the third show of our new CRP podcast The Right News from the Left Coast with my co-hosts for this week Hon. Howard Kaloogian, former state Assemblyman and a leader in the Tea Party Express group, and Republican Women Federated leader Claire Plotner.  We covered the Tea Party movement, the California economy, the upcoming special Congressional election in the 10th district, and more.

  • On Tuesday I had the opportunity to attend the San Diego Business Journal’s major annual event honoring “Women Who Mean Business.”  More than 800 leaders were in attendance, and I was so pleased to see our own Karolyn Dorsee, long time Republican fundraiser, and Farrah Douglas, former Republican city council candidate, recognized with special awards.  Congratulations, Karolyn and Farrah.  Story.

  • The Lincoln Club of San Diego’s Wednesday night event supported Councilman Kevin Faulconer (R), who is seeking re-election next year, and featured Mayor Jerry Sanders (R).  The Mayor and his team continue to support closing the city’s budget gap by bringing spending in line with reality instead of turning to the taxpayers to pay even more.  Thank you, Mayor Sanders.  It’s critical our party continue to support the election of Republican candidates to local government offices throughout California.

  • In one of two special Congressional elections taking place next week, Republican David Harmer continues to wage an aggressive campaign against Dem Lt. Gov John Garamendi.  While the country shifts against the Obama/Pelosi agenda in Washington, Garamendi in this campaign continues to prove to be an unrefined liberal, supporting higher taxes and even the unpopular “public option” in health care reform.  You can help David in his campaign by volunteering this weekend.

As always, I’d like to hear from you.  What are you hearing?  What are we doing well?  What do we need to improve?  Send me an email.  Your feedback is very important.

Thank you very much for your leadership and contributions to victory.

All the best,
Ron Nehring
